James Woodhouse’s father began farming at Hill House Farm in 1959 and James has lived there all his life. Part of the Walsingham Estate, the farm provides good arable land and 70 acres of water meadow in the valley of the River Stiffkey - just perfect for grazing cattle.
The herd has around fifty cows producing one calf each a year. Calves are born from February to April in indoor straw yards. James and his stockman Ian Poole give round the clock care during calving when cows naturally tend to give birth at night.
From May to November the cows and their calves graze out in the water meadows, with the bull running freely among them for the first few months ready for next year! Last year’s offspring are grouped together, either at Hill House Farm or the extended pasture around the same river in Warham. They are sold to the Farms Shop for beef at between 24 and 30 months.
