August news from Walsingham Farms Shop

This month’s excitement is that we have been nominated twice, for each of our shops, in this year’s EDP Food Awards in the Best Farm Shop category. The judging is now under way so we’ll have to wait and see how we do! The Food Awards are part of the annual EDP Norfolk Food Festival which this year runs throughout September, with events through the month instead of crammed into a fortnight in October. Once again we’re entering the annual ‘Battle of the Bangers’ in which we did so well last year, winning the Chefs’ blind tasting (which has to be the one to go for!). What’s new in the shop: olive oil on tap, from Seymours of Norwich, which we tried out at Heacham and which has proved very popular, will also soon be available at Walsingham. Delicious crusty organic bread from Pye Bakery of Norwich is now delivered fresh daily to both shops.

Pure Norfolk extra virgin cold pressed rapeseed oil

PURE NORFOLK

Mark Fletcher, who farms with father Bob just a mile from Walsingham at Manor Farm, Houghton, has just launched his own high quality cold pressed extra virgin rapeseed oil, ‘Pure Norfolk’, the essence of Norfolk in a bottle. Cold pressing keeps all the flavour of the seed and the oil can be used much as you would a top quality olive oil. With its mild, nutty taste and beautiful golden colour the oil is also healthy: cold pressed rapeseed oil has only half the saturated fat content of olive oil, and more of the beneficial Omega 3, 6 and 9. The oil is also better for frying as it is stable at high temperatures. And the food miles are also extra low! £4.95 per 500ml bottle.

NOT QUITE RATATOUILLE
This is the time for locally grown vegetables to be at their peak: now you can buy tomatoes, courgettes, peas and beans, fresh new onions, all from local growers. Cook them into a delicious dish to eat as a light summer supper with good bread, or alongside fresh grilled meats, sausages or fish, or topped with a poached egg. Soften a couple of sliced onions in some of Mark’s Pure Norfolk oil (see above), then add your other vegetables and a crushed clove of garlic. Make sure you include tomatoes as the dish will cook in their juices. Season with salt and pepper and fresh herbs. Simmer till the vegetables are just cooked.

HIGH SUMMER ASPALL DRY SUFFOLK CYDER OFFER 6 for £10
